Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR)

What is SABR?

Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) is an advanced, non-invasive radiotherapy technique used to treat certain cancers, including lung metastases.

SABR delivers a highly precise, ablative dose of radiation over a small number of outpatient sessions (typically 3–8 treatments) with the aim of:

  • Improving tumour control

  • Minimising side effects to surrounding healthy tissue

SABR is:

  • Widely used internationally in North America, Europe, and Asia

  • Proven to achieve high rates of local tumour control (>90%)

  • Associated with low rates of side effects

In the UK, SABR is now used to treat oligometastatic disease, helping patients with 1–3 lung metastases who have a good prognosis from their primary cancer.
