Leeds Gamma Knife Centre

At The Leeds Gamma Knife Centre we have been treating patients since 2009.

In 2015 we upgraded from a Perfexion to a Gamma Knife® Icon™. In 2021 we upgraded the Gamma Knife® Icon™ planning software and undertook a source replacement for its radiosurgery system, helping us to continue the high quality delivery of state-of-the art precision treatment to patients. You can find out more about these updates here.

What makes Leeds Gamma Knife Centre special?

  • Leeds Gamma Knife Centre is one of only four centres in the UK able to deliver Stereotactic Radiosurgery using Gamma Knife® Icon™
  • this offers patients world-class, gold-standard treatment
  • the only centre in the North of England to offer ICON, we are able to deliver individualised treatment without compromising precision or accuracy
  • it is the only centre in the country offering consecutive daily treatments
  • it is the only centre in the North that is commissioned to treat both adults and paediatrics
  • it enables the option to perform single or fractionated, frame-based or frameless treatments.

What is Gamma Knife treatment?

Gamma Knife® or stereotactic radiosurgery is:

  • non-invasive
  • pain free
  • a technologically advanced technique used to treat various types of brain disease.

How does it work?

Despite the name, no knife or traditional surgery is involved. Instead, a pioneering Gamma Knife® Icon™ machine uses three-dimensional computer imaging to deliver very narrow and intensely focused beams of gamma radiation with pinpoint accuracy to defined areas of the brain.

This highly targeted radiosurgery destroys the diseased cells without damaging adjacent tissue.

Gamma Knife® is undertaken as a day case procedure, with most patients returning to normal activities within a few days.

We currently offer Gamma Knife® treatment for one or several intracranial lesions or neurological conditions.

The treatment is available to both NHS and private patients, with some restrictions set by NHS England. All referrals will be discussed by our multi-disciplinary team of experts prior to acceptance.
