At Nova Healthcare we have access to the most sophisticated diagnostic imaging technology, including CT, PET and MRI scanners, allowing us to accurately diagnose and carefully monitor a wide range of conditions. The particular technology your doctor will use is dependent upon your symptoms and condition.
Imaging technology is used to create pictures of the structures and metabolic activity inside your body and may be combined with pathology, urinalysis and other diagnostic techniques to provide important information about the progress of your condition.
Diagnostic imaging techniques include:
Computed Tomography (CT scan)
CT scanning is a non-invasive medical test that combines the use of x-ray equipment with sophisticated computer software to produce cross-sectional images of internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels. CT scans can be used to diagnose and monitor cancer.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI scan)
Magnetic resonance imaging is a non-invasive medical test that uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed pictures images of organs, soft tissues, bone and internal body structures. MRI is used to diagnose and monitor a range of diseases, without the need for ionising radiation.
Nuclear Medicine Scans
Nuclear medicine imaging scans use radioactive materials called radiotracers which are injected into a vein, swallowed, or inhaled as a gas. The radiotracer accumulates in the area of the body being examined and omits energy in the form of gamma rays. The gamma rays are detected with a gamma camera or PET scanner, which measure the amount of radiotracer absorbed by the body to produce images that detail the structure and function of internal organs and tissues.
Position Emission Tomography / Computed Tomography (PET/CT)
Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging is a type of nuclear medicine that measures functions of the body, such as blood flow, oxygen uptake and sugar metabolism. It is used to evaluate how well organs and tissues are working and can be combined with a CT scan to provide excellent anatomical images that pinpoint the location of any abnormal metabolic activity within the body.
