Leeds Cancer Centre Prepares to Treat 1000th Lung Cancer Patient

Leeds Cancer Centre is preparing to treat its 1000th lung cancer patient using Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR). SABR is an advanced radiotherapy technique that delivers a high dose of precisely targeted radiation over a small number of outpatient treatment sessions. It is used in patients with potentially curable lung cancer, for whom surgery is not suitable.

Leeds has pioneered the development of SABR in the UK and was the first centre to treat primary lung cancer patients using this technique. It has now treated more patients than any other UK centre and attracts referrals from all over the country.

The service is led by Dr Kevin Franks, Consultant Clinical Oncologist who is one of the UK’s leading SABR clinicians. He comments:

“This is a very important programme which is now benefitting patients from Yorkshire and right across the UK. The success of the Leeds programme and the increasing numbers of patients being referred here from all across the country, is testament to the extremely high level of commitment by a team of specialist staff helping to deliver this care here at Leeds Cancer Centre.”
